Types of Breast cancer

Type of Breast Cancer is determined by the part of Breast and types of cells affected

Ductal carcinoma in-situ

Cancer starts at Milk ducts and have not spread to other parts of Breast tissue. If untreated over time can become invasive by spreading to other parts of breast tissue as well.

Invasive Ductal carcinoma

It accounts for 80% of all invasive Ductal carcinoma. This is most common form of Breast cancer. It starts in the milk duct and then infiltrates to other part of Breast tissues. Also has potential to spread to other part of body.

Inflammatory Breast cancer

This is very rare and aggressive type of Breast Cancer in which it blocks lymph vessels in the skin of Breast tissue. It accounts for 1-5% of Breast cancer

lobular carcinoma in situ

Lobular carcinoma in-situ

Abnormal cell growth occurs at Lobules .Usual age of onset at Pre-menopausal age 40-50 years .Accounts for 10% of Breast cancer. It isn't life threatening.

Invasive Lobular carcinoma

2nd Most common type of Breast cancer in Lobule(Milk produsing gland) and overtime can spread to lymphnode and to other part of body.

Breast angiosarcoma

Its rare form of Breast Cancer occurs in cells lining blood vessels or lymph vessels .Angiosarcoma can cause skin changes like purple colored nodule in Breast.

What are signs and symptoms of Breast cancer?

Having regular screening tests is helpful in detection of Breast cancer,it is very important to be able to identify the signs of Breast cancer through self-examination and an awareness of the signs and symptoms is essential.

Perhaps the most recognized symptom of Breast cancer is a lump or mass in the tissue. Most of these lumps are painless and hard with irregular edges. But sometimes they can also be painful, tender, soft and round.Any new lump found in the Breasts must be reported to a doctor for further examination.

  • Symptoms of Breast cancer vary from person to person. Some common, early warning signs of Breast cancer include:
  • Skin changes, such as swelling ,redness,or other visible differences in one or both breasts
  • An increase in size or change in shape of the Breast(s)
  • Changes in the appearance of one or both nipples
  • Nipple discharge other than Breast milk
  • Lumps or nodes felt on or inside of the Breast

Changes to the skin texture on Breast texture on the Breast may be caused by a skin condition like eczema, and swollen lymph nodes may be caused by an infection in the Breast or another, unrelated illness.Seeing a doctor for an evaluation will help you determine whether something you notice is cause of concern.

what are Causes of Breast cancer?

Breast cancer risk factors

The Causes of Breast cancer may be sporadic ( 70%) ,familial (20-25) or hereditary (5-10%).When DNA in Breast cells mutate or change, disabling specific functions that control cell growth and division,In many cases, these cells die or are attacked by the immune system. But some cells escape the immune system and grow unchecked, forming a tumor in the breast.

While the exact Cause of Breast cancer may be unknown, certain risk factors are linked to the disease.

How is Breast cancer treated?

We target Breast cancer with comprehensive treatment and technologies. Treatment plan depends upon various factors like:

  • Type of Breast cancer
  • ER/PR and HER2 status
  • Patients BRCA1/BRCA2 status
  • Stage of cancer
  • Genetic markers
  • Age & General status of health
  • Patients Menopausal status

Breast cancer treatment usually is the combination of surgery, radiotherapy & chemotherapy

Surgery :

Surgery is undertaken either in the form of mastectomy(removal of complete Breast),modified radical mastectomy(removal of entire breast along with axillary lymph nodes) or lumpectomy(removal of tumor with margins). Reconstructive surgery is considered, Breast conservative therapy(BCT).

Chemotherapy :

It is intravenous administration of medicines that targets the cancer cells. Chemotherapy may be recommended before Breast cancer surgery(neo adjuvant) or after surgery(adjuvant)

Neoadjuvant(or primary systemic) breast cancer chemotherapy is used before surgery to reduce the size of large breast tumors and to destroy cancer cells. This helps for Breast conserving surgeries.

Adjuvant breast cancer chemotherapy is used after surgery or radiation therapy to eliminate any remaining cancer cells that may not have been removed during surgery which prevents tumor spreading to other parts.

During chemotherapy patient will be monitored with Blood tests,CT scan,MRI scans and X-rays.

Hormone therapy :

This type of treatment is specific to patients who have been identified as hormone receptor positive,(ER/PR).

Selective estrogen receptor modulators(SERMs) : These drugs bind to estrogen receptors in the Breast cancer cells to block estrogen from reaching cancer cells, preventing their growth.Tamoxifen is the commonly used drug used to prevent Brest cancer.

Aromatase inhibitors : These hormone therapy drug block estrogen production by binding to the enzyme responsible for producing estrogen(the aromatase enzyme). This prevents them from growing and dividing.

Radiation therapy :

Exposure to high density X ray to kill cancer cells.Main intent of radiation therapy is to minimize the chances of local recurrence. Radiation is usually advised after mastectomy, depending on the pathological findings post-surgery.

Targeted therapy :

If laboratory testing reveals the HER2 gene in the cancer cells, the medications may help shut down the HER2 gene, cutting cancer cells off from their energy supply.

Breast cancer Targeted therapy is commonly paired with other treatments, such as chemotherapy to help control cancer that has spread to prevent breast cancer recurrence.

Immunotherapy :

Immunotherapy may also be an option to treat patients with inoperable, metastatic breast cancer with one of two genetic features : microsatellite instability-high(MSI-H) or mismatch repair deficiency (dMMR).
